To Ruth Hawker (1897- 1976), fresh from finishing school in England, life on an outback sheep station in South Australia before the age of mechanisation was hazardous and full of surprises. Overnight, she found herself in charge of all the unwarranted chores.
Rabbit-pack hunts, marching caterpillar invasions, plagues of mice, orphaned lambs, obstreperous horses, demanding cats, and one overgrown, over-affectionate emu were all part of the life she came to love.
As fine-drawn as an etching, abounding in humour and understanding, this delightful vignette recaptures the outback life of an earlier era. (back cover)
