This study is concerned with a familiar theme in Western Australian folklore - the pioneering of the Wheatbelt during the years between the gold boom of the 1890s and the depression of the 1930s. Some have regarded the development of this region as a triumph of hardy pioneers over formidable natural obstacles, while others have viewed the process as a tragic and gross waste of public money and private effort.
