In 1982, the now-famous Barbican concert hall opened with a series of gala events, including song recitals by internationally renowned singers Victoria de Los Angeles, Christa Ludwig, Janet Baker, Gundula Janowitz, Margaret Price, Felicity Lott, Nicolai Gedda and Thomas Allen. But the top bill went to none of these luminaries. It was to their accompanist, an Australian named Geoffrey Parson (1929–1995).
It was a long way from Geoffrey's humble beginnings in the suburbs of Sydney half a century before. But, with a sublime talent, a gift for musical generosity, and the charm of a bon vivant, he forged an international career for himself as an accompanist to some of the greatest classical musicians of his time.
Among Friends is a biography of an extraordinary musical life - from school hall days and eisteddfod to Glyndebourne and international concert stages. Drawing extensively on personal letters and diaries, reviews and interviews, it also features vignettes of many of the world's greatest singers - Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Victoria de Los Angeles, Janet Baker, Olaf Bar, Jessye Norman and Barbara Bonney.
