Pictorial history of galvanised iron use in Australia. Australia's ties with 'galvo' began with the gold rush during the 1850s. Thousands abandoned Australian towns and cities for the goldfields in a mass exodus of gold fever. These people found few facilities in the goldfields. There was little building material and a shortage of builders and other tradesmen. This created an unprecedented demand for cheap, portable and durable building materials and for rust-proof articles such as washing pans. Galvo provided the answer. (Introduction)
