Set in the Torres Strait in the mid-1850s, Idriess tells the story of the local inhabitants' lives and mythologies, and of the fate of shipwrecked Europeans (Trove).

Idriess based his novel on the true story of the wrecking of the barque Charles Eaton. It was later reworked as a children's book, Headhunters of the Coral Sea.
