Alan King had one burning ambition - to become a surgeon. When he was offered a position as Flying Doctor in Wyndham he grabbed it, knowing it would enable him to save enough money to finance his studies in Edinburgh. But like many young people of his time, he was swept up by World War II.
While incarcerated in German POW camps he learnt how to treat and control tuberculosis. When he returned to Australia TB was spreading with frightening speed. Alan King's work in controlling the epidemic is one of the important stories in Australian medicine. (back cover)
