Completing the Picture: Women Artists and the Heidelberg Era was a touring exhibition held in 1992-1993.
The Heidelberg Era is the most celebrated period in Australian art. We have absorbed the images of bush heroes created by Heidelberg artists into our cultural mythology. Until now, there has been little acknowledgment of women in this Australian mythology. This book subtly challenges the old myths by highlighting the part women played in shaping the history of the period and by presenting women's interpretation of the landscape.
Women were not silent observers of the significant changes that occurred in Australia at the turn of the 20th century. Although constrained by the social norms of the time, women were active campaigners for social change, involved in major issues such as the extension of suffrage.
Completing the Picture assembles seventy-six works by nineteen artists. Years of detective work went into locating the paintings, some of which have not been exhibited before.
