This book gathers together crime reports of convict women sent to the Female Factory, Parramatta for secondary punishment.
The Factory was a multi purpose institution, serving as an asylum for newly arrived transportees, a place for secondary punishment for those committing crimes in the colony, a place of refuge for the elderly and infirm, a labour exchange for those awaiting reassignment, a marriage bureau, a manufacturer and lastly a hospital for accident and illness but particularly childbirth. It is powerful story oof women and their place in society between 1821 and 1848. (Page 9)
