On 26 January 1808, the British Army Corps stationed in Australia deposed the British Governor William Bligh. Locking him up, military officers and colonists then briefly ran the colony as their private kingdom for two years. The Rum Rebellion of 1808 was the only successful armed takeover of government in Australian history.
