A biography of Australian Labour Party federal politician, Arthur Calwell (1896-1973), including his role as Minister for Immigration and Leader of the Opposition.
Arthur Calwell was a man dedicated to his ideals and to the Australian Labor Party. Forthright and outspoken, he was never far removed from controversy. Censorship during the war, the immigration policy and its concomitant White Australia policy, the split which culminated in the formation of the DLP, the Vietnam War; all of these were issues into which Calwell plunged with energy and determination.
Calwell is perhaps best remembered as the man who, at the end of World War II, initiated and administered with great drive and success, a massive European immigration to Australia. This programme went a long way towards shaping the Australian society we know today.
