Biography of Big Nick (John Robert Nichols) ranked as one of the Australian Football League's greatest ruckmen of all time. He started playing senior football at Maryborough at 14; at 18, he won Carlton's best and fairest award, a feat he achieved a record 5 times. He played 331 games with Carlton, then a VFL record, and 31 matches with Victoria, during which he achieved the honours of being State Captain, State Coach and All-Australian Captain.
Nicholls captained the Carlton 1968-70 premiership sides and, in his first season as captain-coach in 1972, led them to another flag. Altogether, he played 24 finals matches and 6 grand finals. He was actively involved in VFL football for 20 years, both as a player and a coach.
