Armies of World War 3 describes the weapons and explains the tactics of the Warsaw Pact and NATO armies, and identifies the differing theories and practices of Soviet Bloc and Western armed forces.
The major battlefield of World War 3 is likely to be north-west Europe, where the armies of NATO and the Warsaw Pact face each other across the uneasy frontier of a divided Germany. The land battle will be dominated by armoured forces. The Soviet armies are trained and equipped for a blitzkrieg type assault, with massed tanks and mechanicized infantry supported by artillery and aircraft. Airborne forces and helicopter-borne commandos will raid deep into NATO territory, and further disruption of the vulnerable read areas is threatened by nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.
Within days, the Soviet army's thrust may take them to the banks of the Rhine, if NATO's defences can be overrun. The Western forces, however, will be fighting over familiar territory with highly sophisticated weapons, and the outcome of the land battle for Europe is far from being a foregone conclusion.
