Surveyed and gazetted in 1912, Trayning's first thirty years of development were impacted by drought, war and depression. Despite these constraints, Trayning remained a critical grain and wool producer.
Significant technological change during the late 1960s saw a decline in the Shire population when farmers were forced to increase the size of their properties. Despite an increase in wheat production, this population decline is typical of other Wheatbelt shires.
