The history of pharmacy in Western Australia is intertwined with the state's settlement and development. The initial supply of medicines at the Swan River Colony was via colonial surgeons attached to the military. Early doctors include Dr Charles Simmonds and Alexander Collie. Dr William Milligan was the first licenced medical practitioner in Western Australia.
The first chemist and druggist in Perth was George Shenton (1811-1867). He quickly prospered and, in 1838, moved to Hay St.
Edward Mayhew was also the first pharmacist to be registered in this state under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act of 1894. For over 30 years, he held the position of registrar of the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society, the body responsible for the administration of the Act.
