The story of Lemuel Parker, wrongfully arrested and sentenced to transportation in the last decade of the 18th Century. He travels to Sydney Cove in the Third fleet (1791) and befriends Collie Barnes, a young thief.
They are the victims of bullying by the gaoler, Bulstrode. Collie is lost overboard; Lemuel is proved innocent, and eventually inherits land from Mr Larkville, his benefactor. But Lemuel is sure Bulstrode murdered Collie and is determined to prove it.
When Bulstrode returns to Sydney with a wife - who wears jewels Lemuel recognises from Collie's description - Lemuel plots to avenge the boy's death. But all is not gloom, for Georgina enters Lemuel's life.
