In 1918 the troopship Boonah returned to Fremantle with soldiers infected with the Spanish Flu, then rampant in South Africa, where the ship had previously docked. The soldiers were sent to the Woodman Point Quarantine Centre, where many died, as did the nurses taking care of them.
