The adventures of its characters transport you from the arrival of Captain James Stirling and Thomas Peel with the first settlers in 1829 to the skirmishes between settlers and Aborigines culminating in the Pinjarra Massacre to Cape Colony, England, the Victorian goldfields and back to Fremantle.

It follows the lives of two young settler siblings, Sara Jane (Sarjan), William (Willem) and an Aboriginal boy (Yeddi) brought together in tragic circumstances. As they reach adulthood, the love between Sara Jane and Yeddi becomes apparent - a love that transcends custom and race and flourishes in its innocence, only to be stifled by circumstances, distance and time, which inexorably forces them to assume their given positions in contemporary society.

Sarjan is a story of pioneering spirit, hardship, adventure, fulfilment, heartaches and love, of the trials and triumphs faced by those of very different cultures, of the clashes between the settlers and Aborigines and of the bonding that can occur despite these different backgrounds. (back cover)
