Lonely graves are a poignant reminder of Western Australia's pioneering history. They are burials in places other than registered cemeteries or churchlands. Many of the early burials took place on settlers' properties in private cemeteries, on mining leases, by the roadside, or on islands off the coast; as a result, many headstones have been lost due to aging, weathering, or neglect.
In some instances, there are graves listed in cemeteries where most plots are unmarked or where only a few memorials stand in a cemetery that is isolated or inaccessible. Included are some burials at sea. (Introduction)
