George Arthur (1784–1854) was a governor whose ill fame has, for many years, been accepted as traditional despite his administration's generally commendable results.
His life's work led him among the buccaneering, slave-driving log cutters of Honduras, the bushrangers, Aboriginals, convicts and lip-serving 'liberals' of Van Diemen's Land and the Feringhee-hating Indians. (book flap)
