Albany stands on the magnificent harbour discovered by Captain George Vancouver. The growth of the city, which stands on the site where Major Edmund Lockyer landed to forestall a possible French claim to the territory, has been closely tied to the development of the harbour, and much local history is based on maritime activities.
For many years, Albany was of great economic and strategic significance. It was a vital bunkering port, the home of the whaling industry and the assembly point for troop convoys in the First World War.
The city, which has grown around the beautiful harbour, retains much of the flavour of the past, with buildings that include the homes of Captain John Hassell, Patrick Taylor, and George McCartney Cheyne.
This book tells the stories of twenty-nine of Albany's most historic buildings and other features, written by Helen H Wilson and illustrated with striking sketches by Bruce Wroth.
