Book Description

On the 3rd March 1885, 700 soldiers left Sydney to join the British expeditionary force in the Sudan. This was the first military force dispatched by a self-governing colony to an imperial war.

Supporters praised the acting NSW Premier, William Brede Dalley, for making Australia a "Nation" and ensuring a grateful Britain would come to Australia's defence.

Opponents including Henry Parkes, formed Australis's first anti-war movement, denouncing the enterprise as unlawful and unnecessary.
