Originally published in 1978 by UWA Press for the Public Health Department of Western Australia, Doctor Davidson provides a detailed account of the history of leprosy in north west Australia.

He traces the probable introduction of the disease by pearling boat crews from Southeast Asia or by Chinese migrants. After initial cases among the Chinese in the 1890s, the disease appeared in Aboriginal people.

Davidson delves into the social impact of the disease and the impact of Bungarun, the Derby leprosarium that was opened in 1936.

Includes a bibliography and index.
