On 19 November 1941, the light cruiser HMAS Sydney fought a close quarter battle with the German armed raider Kormoran, off Carnarvon on the Western Australian coast. Both ships suffered mortal damage and later sank.
More than 300 German sailors were rescued but none of the 645 men abroad the Sydney survived. Tom Frame examines one of the most puzzling naval engagements in modern maritime history.
