This book is designed to maintain interest in the history and heritage of Canberra's hostels, guest houses and early hotels.
Hostels, hotels, guest houses and construction camps were an integral part of Canberra's urban and social framework for just over 60 years. In the period up to 1960, their presence largely reflected the itinerant nature of the city's population and the importance of its building and construction industry to the city. In 1951, 18% of the city's population lived in hostels and guest houses.
Chapters include: early Canberra, Parliament House opening in 1927, post-Second World War, Commonwealth hostels, the 31 establishments, and locational maps.
