On the coastal strip 50kms north of Perth, is the resort town of Yanchep, which derives its name from the Aboriginal word Yanget, a type of native flax with edible roots found in the area.
Long before European settlement Yachep was known to the Aborigines. It was used as a hunting ground and the lakes and caves of the area were believed to have been inhabited by evil spirits known as the Waugal.
The area first came to the attention of Europeans in 1834, when John Butler, in his search for lost cattle and grazing grounds, noted the lakes and the abundant variety of game. (Introduction)
