What are those old guns in the park? Where did they come from, and what is their significance? War Trophies answers these questions and promotes a shared sense of community responsibility towards these guns that were captured by men of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the far-off fields of battle during the First World War, 1914-18. After the war, when the guns were presented to the Australian towns that received them, a written agreement was signed guaranteeing their permanent display and preservation.
The many photographs throughout this book illustrate a large collection of First World War guns, many of which are now rare or unique, as most of the trophy guns in Europe were melted down to make new weapons in the Second World War, 1939-45.
