Melbourne's Botanic Gardens are famous throughout Australia. They are largely the result of one man's foresight and horticultural skill - W R Guilfoyle.
Despite early opposition and problems with finance, he produced, from 1873 to 1909, a landscape canvas of nearly ninety acres. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle claimed the gardens were 'absolutely the most beautiful place' he had ever seen.
Guilfoyle's life story had not previously been recorded until this book was published in 1974.
