Charles Sturt (1795-1869), Captain of the 39th Regiment stationed in Sydney, was one of Australia's most notable explorers.
Very few others played as significant a role in opening up the Australian Interior. In 1828, Captain Sturt led an expedition to penetrate as far westward as possible. Sturt and his party left Sydney in the direction of the Wellington Valley and eventually reached the old camps near Macquarie swamps. The marsh had dried out and Sturt was able to push further.
Sturt went on to explore over 200 miles of desert country, naming the Darling River, later reached the Castlereagh and returned to the Wellington Valley.
