In the years immediately after the First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay, the primary concern of the colonist, both free and convict, was to establish a foothold on what was to them an inhospitable continent.
The colonist soon established recreational activities which reflected the British society from which they came. These activities were often violent, brutal and crude. But gradually, a minority established gentler, more cultured pursuits such as those associated with music and the theatre. (book flap)
