Second revised edition with foreword by Sir Paul Hasluck. First published in 1948 by the Fremantle City Council.
The story of Fremantle is much more than the growth of a town into a city. Through the years, this settlement at the mouth of the Swan River has reflected the fortunes of a colony which later became a self-governing state covering a third of the Australian continent.
For nearly a hundred years, Fremantle was the port, the gateway only to Australia's westernmost state. But with the completion of the transcontinental railway in 1917 and more effectively, with the conversion to standard gauge, it has truly become the western gateway to a continent.
This is the story of how Fremantle grew from very humble beginnings and of the men and women who helped it grow. It is more than the history of the local government, telling of the city's cultural life, its harbour and the modern industrial complex near Kwinana.
Western Gateway records the work of citizens who laboured in various ways and made decisions that met the changing needs of a town and then of a city over a period of nearly a century. (back cover)
