Book Description

Secondhand. Good condition. Wear to book corners. Dust jacket has creasing at edges and some minor tearing at spine top. Small moisture stain on tail back cover.

Joyce Shiners was born in Katanning in 1915, the eldest of five children. In 1922, her family moved to a bush block at Pingrup, where financial hardship and isolation meant education opportunities were minimal.

After various occupations and living independently from her family, Joyce married Frederick Blyth (Bly) Shiner and went farming, first at Benger and then at Bakers Hill. Together, they raise six children while battling to establish themselves on the land.

In The Way It Was, Joyce Shiner engagingly recreates her experiences as a young woman from the 1930s to the end of World War II. Humorous and warm, generous in its sympathies, this book gives voice to the still largely unheard experiences of women on the land.
