Book Description

Secondhand. Very good condition. Minor wear to book corners. Dust jacket has light creasing and sunning to top edge.

Joyce Shiners was born in Katanning in 1915, the eldest of five children. In 1922, her family moved to a bush block at Pingrup, where financial hardship and isolation meant education opportunities were very limited.

After various occupations and living independently from her family, Joyce married Frederick Blyth (Bly) Shiner and went farming, first at Benger and then at Bakers Hill. Together they raise six children while battling to establish themselves on the land.

In The Way it Was, Joyce Shiner engagingly recreates her experiences as a young woman from the 1930s to the end of WWII. Humorous and warm, generous in its sympathies, this book gives voice to the still largely unheard experiences of women on the land.
