This history of the Victoria Plains was commissioned by the Victoria Plains Shire to mark the centenary of local government in Western Australia. The Victoria Plains Road Board was one of the original eighteen, established in 1871. Its boundaries in those days ran through Carnamah in the north and Bolgart in the south, and from the Indian Ocean to the South Australia border.
The district's history dates back to 1836, when G. F. Moore explored the Moore River. The shepherds and squatters moved their flocks there after 1841, and the New Norcia Mission was established in 1846. After a century and a quarter, it is still one of the best pastoral areas in the State. And the Mission still stands.
Rica and Syd Erickson lived at Bolgart for more than thirty years.
