The Strand is one of Syndey's best-loved buildings. The Strand was conceived in the enthusiasm of the late 1880s and it was opened in 1892 with great expectation. Those expectations however were not realised in the early years and two depressions, two world wars and two fires threatened its very existence. Its faithful restoration in the 1970s and 1980s reflects the community's enthusiasm to preserve Sydney's architectural heritage. (book flap)
