The story of George Tallis, who arrived in Australia as a seventeen-year-old immigrant in 1886 and rose to become head of J.C. Williamson Ltd, the world's largest entertainment organisation. This book is his story, an intriguing view of Australian entertainment between 1886 and 1938.
Tallis mastered the theatre trade, replacing Williamson in 1913 and consolidated and expanded the business with large investments in the new and growing media of film and radio. By 1925, the Williamson empire was a colossus of the international entertainment industry.
With the aid of family documents, Tallis's own unpublished memoirs and a wealth of correspondence, the book gives a unique insight.
"One of the most important books on the Australian theatre yet to have been produced." - Katherine Brisbane.
