For most of the period between 1860 and 1900, the emphasis in the six colonies was on settlement, progress and development. Optimism, energy, ready capital for investment and a willingness to ignore or overcome difficulties produced a high material standard of living for most of the population, though those who were unable to conform to this vision were impoverished and excluded.
