The Officer and His Lady is a condensed version of Australian colonial history that features the lives of two special people, Lt Col George Johnston and his wife, Esther Abrahams Julian Johnston, who, with their talented children, contributed so much to the development of Australia from its colonial days of 1788.
George Johnston was involved in his first battle in the War of Independence in America at 13. Following naval engagements against the French and Napoleon, he sailed to Australia on the 1st Fleet in charge of the guards on the female prison ship The Lady Penryn.
Esther Abrahams, a 15-year-old Jewess, was convicted of shoplifting in London and in 1786, was sentenced at the Old Bailey to seven years transportation to the penal colony Australia. Esther sailed on The Lady Penryn, where, fortuitously, a relationship evolved on board the ship, which was the beginning of George and Esther's lives together in Australia after landing at Sydney Cove in 1788.
