Long before the first permanent European settlement in Australia was established, merchants employed by Dutch commercial enterprises had reported the existence of the world's sixth continent. Therefore, trade relations between the Netherlands and Australia began much earlier than two hundred years ago.
Apart from traditional forms of economic transactions, the relationship between the two economies was given a new impetus by the many Dutch emigrants who had built a new life in Australia. (Foreword)
