The Monk, first published in 1796, is a notoriously scandalous Gothic horror novel blending eroticism, horror, and social critique. It tracks the shocking descent of Ambrosio, a pious Spanish abbot, who falls into depravity, sorcery, and murder after being seduced by a woman disguised as a monk.
This edition, published by The Folio Society in 1984 and based on the first edition, features an introduction by legendary Gothic scholar Devendra P. Varma and classic wood-engravings by George Tute.
