James (Jim) Henry Sturgiss was born in 1890 in Argyle, New South Wales. When he was five, his family moved to Sassafras at Burntwood on the upper reaches of the Bullee Brook. Jim had little formal education and spent most of his life as a grazier. He served in both World Wars, firstly as a member of the Light Horse and during WWII was elevated to the rank of Major in charge of Bega camp, responsible for surveillance of the NSW coast from Bermagui to Cape Howe.
After WWII, he leased land on the Sassfras Plateau, resuming his pastoral interests. Eucalyptus sturgissiana was named in honour of him and in recognition that he had discovered most of the known population of the species. (Australian National Herbarium)
He died on 16 December 1983, in the Borough, New South Wales, at the age of 93.
