The story of the Sunset Hospital in Dalkeith is a fascinating one, spanning almost a century from 1906 to 1995. It is a rich tapestry of generational change and a fitting memorial to the hospital, crafted from limestone.
The hospital began as the Claremont Old Men's Home, a replacement for a depot for elderly and incapacitated male paupers in Kings Park. In March 1906, the home was opened with space for 400 inmates. By the 1920s, a severe bed shortage had precipitated the need for a new extension to be built. With the Great Depression, inmates almost doubled.
The name changed to the Sunset Hospital in 1943, and in 1965, women were first admitted. The hospital was decommissioned in 1995 and heritage listed in 1997. (ABC Radio)
