In 1872, Hill End was a thriving NSW goldfield town. There were 28 hotels and over a kilometre of shops. At its height, the population was estimated at 8,000. Today the population is just over one hundred. The neighbouring town of Tambaroora had over 40 businesses and 10 hotels. Its population included 1,500 Chinese. Today, the population is fewer than 100.
This book records the story of Hill End and Tambaroora in their early days, when the streets were thronged with people who came from the ends of the earth to find gold. Although gold was the sole reason for the population boom in these towns, this volume is more concerned with their people. Their lives, in an isolated area wth a rigorous climate and few amenities.
