Peter Coleman has written the first account of the life of his long-time friend, James McAuley, who died in 1976. James McCauley was one of Australia's most distinguished poets, a far-ranging critic and the founding editor of the magazine Quadrant.
James McAuley was born in Sydney in 1917 and was Professor of English at the University of Tasmania. He was active in politics and New Guinea affairs. In 1954, after the Labor Party split, he was a central figure in the anti-Communist group of B A Santamaria.
The book examines his work and places the poetry in its biographical context, from his anarchist and avant-garde youth to his libertarian conservatism and Catholic conversion in later years.
