A historical handbook originally published in London in 1848 and recreated from the original in the Mitchell Library, Sydney, by the Reader's Digest in 1974.
It served as a practical manual for British citizens considering relocation to the Australian colonies during the mid-19th century and included essential details for prospective settlers, including climate, soil, employment opportunities, and the local culture of the region. In 1848, when the booklet was published, 23,904 people left the UK for the Australian colonies and New Zealand.
In addition to South Australia, the guide also covers Sydney, Port Phillip (Victoria), Western Australia (Swan River Colony), Van Diemenâs Land (Tasmania), and New Zealand.
