Following the outbreak of WWII, most European refugees in Britain were interned as enemy aliens even though many were Jewish escapees from Hitler's Europe. Some of these refugees were dispatched to the colonies.
In July 1940, 2542 internees were sent to Australia on the Dunera. On the voyage, they experienced appalling conditions and were treated dreadfully by their British guards. The journey led to new exile at New South Wales' Hay and Tatura camps. Some stayed there till 1945, while others were released early and moved to back Britain or moved to the USA or Palestine.
In The Dunera Internees, Benzion Patkin draws on interviews and written recollections to tell the story of the internees. (book flap)
