Young Australian-born Micky Kailis from Perth’s Greek community, against all odds, set up a lobster-processing operation in 1961 with proceeds from the sale of his wife’s car. In a little over ten years, he was known as Western Australia’s "Prawn King" and had established a thriving shipbuilding business. Export, export. Then came pearls and tuna, more harvests from the sea.
Philanthropist, rugby enthusiast, friend of politicians, and generous employer, Michael Kailis is what once would have been called a "character", and his grandfather, a ship-owner merchant from the tiny Greek island of Castellorizo, would have been proud of him. (back cover)
Michael Kailis passed away in June 1999, aged 70.
