From the mid-1880s until the early 1920s, W E Abbott wrote letters to New South Wales newspapers at the rate of around one per week. This extraordinary output ran to hundreds of thousands of words.
Abbott, a pastoralist in the Upper Hunter, was a magistrate, a member of the local land board, an unhappy member of the News South Wales Parliament and a key figure in the determinedly anti-union pastoralists association. He was also a poet and a distinguished scientist interested in the environment.
His letters, which deal with the political and economic issues of the day, reflect his background and interests. They offer a fascinating and challenging account of New South Wales society and politics. (back cover)
