This well-researched book tells the story of Christmas Island, an Australian Territory in the Indian Ocean, from 1899 to 1948, with particular emphasis on the Chinese coolie experience, who came from impoverished areas of South China. 'Suffering through Strength' is the literal translation of the two Chinese words for coolie.
Christmas Island was an uninhabited island opened up for mining, in the face of disease, suffering and exploitation.
Includes many photographs never before published. John Hunt was Christmas Island's Special Magistrate and Coroner from 1974 to 1978.
