A landmark ethnography by J R B Love, first published in 1936. It documents his experiences living among the Worrorra people of the Kimberley region in North-Western Australia for 40 years.
In this book, he recounts how he established his mission station, learned the language, and gradually won the people's confidence. It is a detailed, first-hand account of traditional Kimberley Aboriginal life, covering detailed descriptions of kinship systems and social organisation, beliefs in child-spirits, sacred ceremonies, naming traditions, and funeral practices, methods of hunting, food gathering, fire-making, and housing. Love served as a Presbyterian minister at the Kunmunya Mission and became a respected authority on the tribe's language and customs, and translated the Gospels into Worrorra and Pitjantjatjara.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers, please note that this book may contain descriptions and/or images of people who have passed away.
