Sir John Soane is now regarded as one of the great architects of late 18th and early 19th-century Europe. And increasingly, contemporary architects and designers are being influenced by the subtleties of the unique "Soane style."
Dorothy Stroud's classic book is the culmination of a lifetime's research, bringing together all the threads of her previous writings on Soane and combining a concise biography of the architect with a comprehensive, fully illustrated survey of his works.
Soane was the architect of the Bank of England and designed a vast complex of courts and offices. Soane was also responsible for public buildings in Whitehall and Westminster. He was also instrumental in the founding of the Institute (now Royal Institute) of British Architects.
Author Dorothy Stroud served as the Assistant Curator at Sir John Soane's Museum for nearly 40 years under John Summerson. Stroud oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Museum, in addition to researching and publishing other notable biographies of Soane's architectural tutors, George Dance and Henry Holland.
