This is the story of Sidney Myer, the penniless migrant boy who founded the multi-million dollar retail empire.
Born in the ghettos of Russia, Sidney Myer's (1878-1934) early life was spent in Krichev, Russia. Russia's anti-Jewish laws were becoming increasingly harsh and to avoid years of compulsory army service, Sidney was sent to Australia in 1899, where members of the family were already established.
As a hawker, a Bendigo shopkeeper and eventually the power behind Australia's largest retail store, Myers mastered English, gained an understanding of Anglo-Saxon culture and developed a shrewd business sense that was to see him rise to the power behind Australia's largest retail empire.
This biography was completed in the mid-1930s, shortly after Sidney Myer's death. Includes a foreword by Sir Robert Menzies (book flap)
